A total of 48 multiparous sows (Landrace x Yorkshire) were randomly allocated to 1 of 2 dietary treatments with 24 replicates per treatment based on initial body weight and body condition score. The dietary treatments consisted of corn/soybean meal-based diet fortified with vitamin D₃ (2000 IU/kg diet) in vitamin premix as a control diet (CON) and CON diet supplemented with 50 μg/kg diet 25-hydroxyvitamin D₃ (25-OH-D₃) (TRT). Diets were formulated to meet or exceed the nutrient requirements of sows (National Research Council (2012)) for both gestation and lactation periods. Results showed that the difference in body weight (BW) from initial to before farrowing and after farrowing to weaning, number of piglets born alive were higher (P < 0.05) for sows receiving 25-OH-D₃ supplemented diet compared with those receiving CON diet. In addition, body condition score at weaning was higher (P < 0.05) for sows fed 25-OH-D₃ supplemented diet than those fed CON diet. However, average daily feed intake (ADFI), total tract nutrient digestibility and back fat thickness were not affected by the inclusion of 25-OH-D₃. The serum concentrations of Ca, and 25-OH-D₃ during gestation and the serum concentrations of Ca, P, and 25-OH-D₃ during lactation were higher (P < 0.05) for sows fed 25-OH-D₃ supplemented diet compared to those fed CON diet. The weaning weight and average daily gain (ADG) of piglets raised from sows fed 25-OH-D₃ supplemented diets were higher (P < 0.05) than those piglets born to sows fed CON diet. In conclusion, 25-OH-D₃ supplementation affected the number of piglets born alive, sow’s body weight, body score and improved Ca and 25-OH-D₃ concentrations in serum. In addition, piglet weaning weight and daily gain during lactation were also affected positively.
