Isobaric energy recovery devices (ERD) have achieved nearly universal acceptance in the seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO) world. Because of this, during the last decade, several SWRO plants have upgraded their energy recovery devices with the aim of obtaining energy savings in the operation of the plant. This upgrade generally involves the installation of isobaric chambers (IC) and the replacement of the existing Pelton wheels. The purpose of this paper is to present the results of a study where specific energy consumption (SEC) savings, water production variation and payback for this retrofit in eight full-scale two-stage trains have been evaluated. The retrofits have been grouped based on their configuration after the retrofit and three different configurations have been considered. In light of the results obtained it can be concluded that the configuration selected when retrofitting a train with IC has a significant impact over those key indicators considered when studying investment feasibility.
