Sympatho-adrenal activity and tissue sensitivity to catecholamines of obese subjects before and after protein-supplemented fasting
1984
Biochemical changes were assessed in 27 severely-obese patients after an overnight fast, an epinephrine infusion, and a 3-hour treadmill exercise, before and following a 13-day protein-supplemented fast (PSF) (70 g milk protein/day). The PSF effected a mean 5.7 kg weight loss, a significant blood pressure decrease (low Na intake), a marked basal free fatty acid increase, and a significant reduction in basal epinephrine secretion. Plasma insulin was unaffected by epinephrine infusion either before or after PSF. The overall highly positive benefits of the PSF are discussed. (wz)
