Nutritional problems in India
1983
Reddy, V.
Major nutrition-related disorders in India are reviewed and discussed, including protein-energy malnutrition; xerophthalmia in preschool children; nutritional anemia in close to 50% of children and pregnant women; pellegra, particularly in maize and sorghum diets; endemic goiter, ranging from a mean of 40% prevalence up to 90% in certain areas; fluorosis, a crippling disease induced by high fluoride in drinking water; and other nutritional disorders associated with food toxins. Attempts are being made to provide short- and long-term solutions to these problems within the existing socioeconomic complexities of India. (wz)
