Pacific northwest hardwoods in international trade
1989
Briggs, D.G. | Buhler, C.
Recent domestic and export activity based on hardwood species grown in Washington and Oregon is summarized. This resource supports an industry that sold $190 million of lumber, chips, veneer, and export logs in 1985 and 1986. Exports account for $52 million (28%) of the activity. Lumber and chips account for more than 90 percent of domestic and export sales. Value added in log manufacturing is estimated to be in the range of 75 to 150 percent. Future growth of the industry is uncertain because of questions related to resource adequacy. There are, however, numerous opportunities to apply existing technologies to extract more value from the harvest.
