Grain filling period as a measure of yield improvement in bread wheat
2011
Monpara, B A
Grain filling, the time between anthesis and physiological maturity have been shown to be positively related to grain yield in bread wheat. The objectives of the present investigation were to determine the genetic variation for grain filling and vegetative periods and some agronomic traits as well as the association among them in 21 bread wheat genotypes of varying maturity time. Wide range of variation was observed for yield characters as compared to growth duration characters. High heritability along with high genetic advance and GCV was observed for flag leaf area and grains per plant. Whereas, grain yield per plant expressed low heritability coupled with high genetic advance and low GCV. Long grain filling period was associated with earliness and short vegetative period. Its association was also observed with larger grain weight, higher harvest index and higher grain yield per plant. The results suggested that yield improvement in bread wheat could be possible through selection for higher grain weight and longer grain filling period.
