Glucose metabolism in uremia

Changes in glucose metabolism in uremia apparently represent a diversion of glucose into other biosynthetic systems. An enhanced synthesis of glutamine in the uremic liver may help to dispose of ammonia. Studies of uremic liver slices from rats showed decreases of both CO2 formation and lactate concentration. The results suggest an inhibition of glucose oxidation. Also, a net loss of glucose from the preparation medium and a net gain in the normal controls indicated an increased nonoxidative utilization in the uremic liver. The changes could not be explained by differences in glucose availability resulting from alterations in glycogen degradation.
