The in vivo toxic potential of commercial grade endosulfan (35 EC) on the protein metabolism of fresh water crab Barytelphusa guerini was studied. In a short-term exposure of 96 hr, the total and soluble protein content recorded a depletion followed by a progressive accumulation of free amino acids. The activity patterns of proteases in tissues is also concurrently increased. A progressive enhancement in transaminase (aspartate aminotransaminase and alanine aminotransaminase) activities paralleled the glutamate dehydrogenase elevation in all the tissues. in the hemolymph the soluble protein and free amino acid levels were increased.
