Optimising silage harvesting plans in a grass and grazing simulation using the revised simplex method and a genetic algorithm
1998
Parsons, D.J.
Two methods of optimising silage harvesting using a grassland model are compared. The first one, using the revised simplex method, optimises the times of harvesting only, with the number of cuts and the selection of fields left to the user. The second method, using a genetic algorithm, can also optimise the number of cuts (up to a limit set by the user) and the selection of fields. When restricted to optimising the timing only, the genetic algorithm required many more function evaluations than the simplex method, though it sometimes gave a better result when the simplex method had stopped at a local optimum. Including the field selection increased the number of evaluations needed but found solutions that were better than the fixed selection.
