Fenugreek, Trigonella foenum graecum, the Arabic name Helba, is one of the oldest medicinal plants and culinary. Its seeds, with their chemical compounds, appear to be of great value food and herbal medicines have many virtues. Our results show that chronic treatment of rats with aqueous extract of fenugreek seeds, used in Moroccan traditional medicine, improves the lipid profile with decreased total cholesterol (34%), triglycerides (32%), LDL-cholesterol (38%) associated with an increase in HDL-cholesterol (36%). It also facilitates weight gain in rats, allowing an increase in muscle mass while limiting (or reducing) the excess fat. Fenugreek stimulates the appetite and acts as a natural anabolic allowing better utilization of dietary intakes. Furthermore, macroscopic and histopathological study that we conducted on the liver and kidneys of rats treated with fenugreek shows no sign of cytotoxicity, suggesting that consumption of aqueous extract of seeds of this plant would no adverse effect on the functioning of the body and is harmless to health.
