The characteristics of glucose and insulin levels during glucose tolerance tests (GTT) on healthy obese people as a group were determined and the effects of sex, weight, percent of body fat and age on glucose and insulin levels were evaluated. The test group consisted of 160 healthy male and female patients who averaged 42% over ideal body weight. The statistical upper limit of normal for 2-h glucose was 260 mg/dl in women and 206 mg/dl in men. High insulin levels and delayed peak insulin were present in the majority of patients with normal GTT and absent in many of the most obese patients. The upper limits of normal GTT in the obese were much higher than the currently accepted criteria. The fasting glucose appears to be the most specific blood test for the diagnosis of diabetes in the obese.
