Technical Note: A Low-Cost Water Level Indicator for Shallow Water Table Observation
1990
Boman, B. J.
A simple float device was developed for rapid evaluation of water table depths in soils with large drainable porosity. The indicator is being used in southeast Florida citrus groves to provide water level information for irrigation and drainage decisions. Components of the observation wells and indicators are readily available, durable, and cost $10-15 per site. The float assembly is sensitive enough to indicate water levels less than 13 mm (0.5 in.) above the bottom of the observation well. Growers can drive down the bed where the observation well is located and observe water table position without getting out of the vehicle. Periodic inspection is generally all the maintenance that is required.
