Fish, fatty acids, and human health
1985
Glomset, John A.
A brief commentary discusses 3 recently-reported results supporting the possibility that fish consumption may: 1) prevent coronary heart disease; 2) effect triglyceride metabolism in a way that has therapeutic potential; and 3) increase the cellular content of eicosapentaenoic acid, a fish-oil polyunsaturated fatty acid. These studies emphasize that different types of polyunsaturated fatty acids can produce markedly different metabolic effects and raise questions concerning the relation of "omega-3" polyunsaturated fatty acids to human development, growth, and disease.
