Metabolic balances of cadmium, copper, manganese, and zinc in man
1979
Spencer, Herta | Asmussen, Christine Rusin | Holtzman, Richard B. | Kramer, Lois S.
A dietary balance study of the trace elements in humans was carried out to determine the retention and excretion of cadmium, copper, manganese and zinc. Calcium intake was varied to study its effect on metabolism of trace elements. 19 tests on 9 adults males in a clinical setting revealed that the balances were only slightly negative or normal except zinc, which was positive in 50% of cases. Intestinal excretion was the primary loss of copper, manganese and zinc; cadmium loss was primarily through the urine. Calcium intake appeared to have little effect on retention or excretion rates.
