Nutritional deprivation in childhood and the body size, activity, and physical work capacity of young boys

The influence of malnutrition on growth and work capacity of 96 Indian boys (14-17 years) was studied, comparing data collected when they were 5 years old to current data on nutritional status, anthropometric measurements, typical physical activity and heart rate while performing on a bicycle ergometer. It was found that factors inhibiting growth in childhood continued in later years; both height and weight at age 5 correlated with present measurements. The ability to perform submaximal work was clearly related to body size and lean muscle mass; the undernourished boys had significantly higher heart rates for comparable work output. However, since subjects continued to be nutritionally deprived, this cannot be blamed on childhood malnutrition alone. There appeared to be no relation between early malnutrition and qualitative performance, per unit weight but physical activity correlated with higher work output.
