The effect of the amino acid solution Aminofusin L forte and casein hydrolysate on gastric and pancreatic secretion was studied in a group of patients without pancreatic disease. Aminofusin L forte infused for one hour did not stimulate gastric or pancreatic secretion. Casein hydrolysate infusion led to a significant increase in the concentration and total output of hydrochloric acid. Four-hour intravenous infusion of Aminofusin L forte caused a transient but significant rise of the bicarbonate concentration, amylase activity and above all trypsin activity and output. The results show that nitrogen solutions used for parenteral protein nutrition influence in a different way both gastric and pancreatic secretion.
