An expert system has been developed to provide advice concerning the production requirements, resource utilization and economics of growing crambe (Crambe abyssinica Hochst.) in environmental conditions commonly found in Indiana. Evaluation of the long-term economic risks of adding an alternative crop to an existing production system was made using a knowledge-based expert system coupled to a simulation, which included the effects of weather. The expert system ordered the logic and protocol of the expert. The cropping scheme is modeled by the simulation. The distribution of net profits for multiple years helps determine the economic risk. A feasibility analysis was performed to determine the prices necessary for profitable production of crambe.
