Nutrition education in maternal and child health training programs

The purpose of this study was to define the goals of nutrition training for MCH students, to develop guidelines for basic nutrition content and to suggest strategies for the effective teaching of nutrition. The study objectives were to define 1) the educational background, training and responsibility of the nutrition faculty in the MCH program; 2) the manner and extent to which nutrition was being incorporate in the MCH curriculum of the various schools; 3) the extent of the MCH program's collaboration with other nutrition programs in the school, university and community; 4) what MCH students currently know about maternal and child nutrition and their perception of the importance of various nutrition topics; and 5) how students relate their perceived level of nutrition knowledge to their rating of the importance of the nutrition topics for additional training in the MCH Program. Through the results of this survey, the literature review and personal teaching experience of the authors, the purpose of the study was accomplished.
