Total flow control for a direct injection sprayer
1998
Koo, Y.M. | Sumner, H.R.
A direct-injection total-flow-control sprayer was developed and evaluated. The system provides precise application rates and minimal operator exposure to chemicals, as well as a possibility of recycling pesticide containers that can cause environmental contamination. Main diluent flow was varied in response to changes in the traveling speed of the sprayer. Chemicals were metered and injected proportionally to the diluent flow rate to provide a constant pesticide concentration. Experimental variables of the sprayer were the control interval, sensitivity of the flow regulating valve, tolerance of the control error and sensitivity of the injection pump system. The performance of the flow control system averaged 8.5 s response time at an absolute steady-state error of 0.067 L/min (0.0177 gal/min) or 0.8% of flow rate. The average response time for the injection rate was -0.53 s and the coefficient of variation (CV) of concentration was 3.2%.
