Guidelines on policies and procedures for community action and family nutrition programmes
1980
Malnutrition in most developing countries, particularly in mothers and young children, will be improved only by community efforts which reach the majority of the population living in rural villages and urban slums. Successful community action programs for health and nutrition are comprehensive, designed for local conditions, dependent on community economic and manpower resources, and integrated with national health services and developoment plans. These programs target high-risk groups. Training of community workers and evaluation procedures are important to program effectiveness. In many countries, the present design of services and allocation of resources is ineffective. Procedures to improve community services were discussed by representatives from 20 countries at the Hyderabad Working Conference on community action programs. Activities carried out in different programs focused on community self-assessment, food availability, family finances, the environment, disease control, child spacing, diet improvement and education.
