The B vitamins and vitamin C in human nutrition. II. 'Conditional' B vitamins and vitamin C
1979
Moran, J. Roberto | Greene, Harry L.
The biochemical functions of the "conditional" B vitamins (rather than "obligatory" ones) and vitamin C, and their correlations with deficiency diseases, are reviewed. B vitamins function only as cofactors in specific enzymatic reactions and are required in micro quantities. Normal individuals catabolize and excrete B vitamins without additional benefit. Marginal vitamin intake may be more common than anticipated. Vitamin C in pharmacologic doses is beneficial in certain rare conditions, but it has unwanted side effects when given indiscriminately.
