Effects of chronic cigarette smoking on vitamin C status, lung function, and resting and exercise cardiovascular metabolism in humans
1980
Keith, Robert E. | Driskell, Judy A.
Plasma vitamin C levels, lung function, and cardiovascular metabolism during rest and exercise, were studied in 22 healthy males, 12 of whom smoked cigarettes and 10 of whom did not. Measurements were collected for blood pressure (before and after exercise), resting heart rate, treadmill workload, oxygen consumption, inspired ventilation, and post-exercise blood lactic acid levels. Plasma levels of vitamin C were found to be significantly lower in smokers, although intakes were similar. Smokers also had slightly higher resting heart rates, and lower lung function and metabolism. No differences were noted for oxygen consumption, blood pressure or minute ventilation.
