The Effects of urbanisation and Western diet on the health of Pacific Island populations

The objectives, discussion highlights and 28 recommendations from a regional meeting are summarized. The meeting was organized to help South Pacific Island countries review changes occurring in their diets as a result of increasing urbanization and adoption of Western foods. The 28 recommendations fall into 6 principal categories: food and nutrition policies (4 recommendations); health and nutrition education (3); training (2); data collection (1); food production, processing, and distribution (9); and recommendations to regional organizations (8). Meeting participants recommended that the development of food and nutrition policies receive a high priority. (wz)
