Effect of irrigation and mineral nutrition on the quality of potato

The potato has high biological and nutritional value. Unlike most other vegetable crops, it also has a high-energy value. In view of the importance of proteins, vitamins, carbohydrates and especially minerals contained in potato tubers, we decided to study the effect of irrigation and mineral nutrition on the content of macroelements (K, P, Ca and Mg) in physiologically mature tubers. Potato is a frequent item in the human diet, it is used in a variety of ways, and it supplies the necessary daily requirements of various substances including macroelements. An experiment was established at Rimski Sancevi Experiment Field of the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops, Vegetables Department. The effect of irrigation and fertilization with nitrogen (0-200 kg.ha-1) and potassium (0-200 kg.ha-1) on the content of dry matter and macroelements (K, P, Ca, Mg) were determined in physiologically mature tubers of a medium-early variety "Kennebec" and a medium-late variety "Desiree". The average content of K ranged from 286.64 to 345.38 mg.100 g-1 in the control and from 302.07 to 306.12 mg.100 g-1 in irrigated plots and the average content of P ranged from 57.23 to 61.73 mg.100 g-1 and from 58.22-60.16 mg.100 g-1, respectively. The content of Ca was relatively low when compared with the daily requirement (per person) of 400-500 mg. It ranged from 3.41 to 5.86 mg.100 g-1 in the control and from 2.84-4.32 mg.100 g-1 in irrigated plots and the content of Mg ranged from 23.32 to 25.36 mg.100 g-1 and from 21.41 to 24.93 mg.100 g-1, respectively, while the daily requirement (per person) is 200-300 mg.
