Performance secrets

Costill, David
Reports that marathon runners are improving their performance by drinking coffee instead of sugared drinks and food before races are discussed. Energy from glycogen stored in the body can run out near the 20-mile mark. Sugar consumed before a race stimulates insulin release from the pancreas, causing blood glucose levels to fall and exhausting the runner. Caffeine ingested 60 minutes before racing elevates the level of free fatty acids which are burned up before the stored glycogen.
