Meiosis of wild (Helianthus praecox) and cultivated (H. annuus) sunflower species, their F₁ interspecific hybrid, and two backcross generations were studied. A low level of meiotic chromosomal aberrations in the parents was detected. Interspecific hybridization between wild and cultivated sunflower accessions led to a considerable (50%) increase in the rate of meiotic aberrations in microsporocytes. Backcrossing of hybrids to cultivated sunflower decreased the chromosomal aberration rate to 12.8% in BC₁ and to 9.6% in BC₂. Cytological stability of plants was restored only in BC₂.
