Several studies on solution culture suggest that silicon may be essential or beneficial to the growth of cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.). However, the majority of these have not considered the influence of silicon and the accompanying ion on the osmotic potential (psi(s)) of the nutrient solution, nor have they considered the change of mutual ratios of cations and anions generated by the amount of acid employed to neutralize the alkaline effect of the silicic salt. In the present work we studied the effects of 0, 0.75, and 1.5 mol SiO3(2-) m(-3), as well as the effect of -0.036, -0.072, and -0.108 MPa of osmotic potential of the nutrient solution on the growth of cucumber plants. This was achieved by modifying Steiner's universal solution, so as to include SiO3(2-) and Na(+), adjusting pH solutions with a mixture of acids (HNO3:H3PO4:H2SO4) and making the necessary corrections so that the theoretical psi(s) remained unaltered. The effect of silicon on the growth variables was not significant. However, the contribution of 0.75 mol SiO3(2-) m(-3) was beneficial to plant growth. In contrast, the application of 1.50 mol SiO3(2-) m(-3) decreased all the values of the growth variables, compared with 0.75 mol SiO3(2-) m(-3). The psi(s) of the nutrient solution showed significant statistical differences for some variables. The smallest values of some variables were obtained with the nutrient solution of psi(s) -0.036 MPa and the highest with -0.072 MPa. The solution of -0.108 MPa psi(s), compared with -0.072 MPa, caused a decrease in the values of most variables. The application of 0.75 and 1.5 mol SiO3(2-) m(-3) to the solution resulted in significant concentrations of silicon in leaves.
