Circulating nutrients and neurotransmitter synthesis
1987
Wurtman, R.J.
A technical review summarizes and discusses the current understanding of the effect of circulating nutrients derived from meals, snacks, and certain purified nutrients on brain neurotransmitter biosynthesis in vivo, and the potential benefit of such nutrients for treating certain nervous system disease states. Topics include: the effect of dietary carbohydrate and protein on brain serotonin; the relationships between tryptophan and dietary carbohydrate, and the human brain function and behavior; relationships among brain serotonin, nutrient choice, and carbohydrate craving; circumstances under which nutrient intake can affect neurotransmission; the effects of tyrosine on dopamine and norepinephrine synthesis; and the effect of choline vs. lecithin on acetylcholine synthesis. Representative data are included and discussed.(wz)
