This study was conducted to determine the effect on physical and chemical soil characteristics with different tillage systems. Commercial plots were selected as treatments in Valle de Santiago, Guanajuato, Mexico. The plots were subjected to conventional tillage (LCON), one year of no-tillage (L001), three years of no-tillage (L003), and 11 years of no-tillage (L011). Soil samples were taken at depths of 0-10, 10-20, and 20-30 cm. In all treatments the soil was a Dystric vertisol with a slope of less than 1% and the textural class was clay. Results showed that no-tillage plots had higher values of bulk density, pH, N, P, and organic matter content and aggregate stability, but most of these results were not significantly different from those of conventional plots (alpha = 0.05). Most of the changes were attributed to differences in organic matter content in the plots; however, in some characteristics the effects were not consistent. The porosity calculated in thin soil sheets confirmed the porosity results obtained with density values. Variograms of humidity, bulk density, and penetration resistance did not show any structure of spatial variability. Yield was higher in the L011 treatment.
