In order to further examine the effects of soybean protein (SBP) on lipoprotein and carbohydrate metabolism, 6 hypercholesterolemia patients were fed a lipid-lowering diet for 3 weeks. As a result, mean serum cholesterol decreased 25%. Over the following 2 weeks the patients received a similar composition diet with about 1/2 its protein content replaced by SBP; a further reduction of 10% in serum cholesterol occurred (corresponding to a 9% decrease in low-density lipoprotein). Skeletal muscle lipoprotein lipase activity increaseed 38%, but there was no significant change in intravenous glucose tolerance, fasting blood glucose level, or serum insulin levels either at fasting or after intravenous glucose. It was noted, however, that the insulin index (ratio of peak insulin level to fasting serum insulin level) increased in all patients on the SBP diet. (wz)
