High Cesium Uptake in Wheat Seedlings Cultured with Ammonium

Wheat seedlings grown exclusively on NH₄-N, relative to those grown exclusively on NO₃-N or without N, consistently demonstrated a markedly high capacity for subsequent Cs absorption from solutions labelled with Cs¹³⁷. In addition, previous nitrogen nutrition greatly influenced the relative distribution of absorbed Cs, with percentage transport of Cs to tops being greatest in seedlings cultured with NO₃. The results could not be explained on the basis of either K content or respiratory substrate levels prior to the uptake periods.
