Products of wheat straw biodegradation by Cyathus stercoreus
1983
Abbott, T.P. | James, C. | Plattner, R.D.
The residual biodegradation produces of wheat straw lignin attacked by Cyathus stercoreus for thirty days were identified. Low-molecular-weight nonvolatile materials constituted less than 5% of the total 14C released from labeled lignin. In this portion, syringic acid, vanillic acid, p-hydroxy benzoic acid, acetic acid, and 2-methoxy-succinic acid were found. The majority of the water-soluble biodegradation products (89%) are lignin-carbohydrate complexes with molecular weights greater than 1000. Analysis of the gases resulting from lignin breakdown and metabolism reveals primarily CO2, with smaller amounts of ethanol, methanol, and acetone. The gas phase, flushed out with air and recovered, constitutes 50% of the total lignin breakdown products.
