The relative importance of genetics and diet in determining adipocyte number and size in the periovarian fat pad of the rat
1980
Boroumand, M. | Miller, D.S. | Wise, A.
To investigate the influence of genetics and diet on obesity in rats, 3 different diets (stock, wheat, or high-fat) were fed to 7 types of rats for 98 days. The wheat and stock diets produced little difference in numbers or size of adipocytes in the periovarian fat pad. The high-fat diet resulted in 9% increase in body weight and 31% increase in body-fat proportion; there were 42% more adipocytes which contained 32% more fat. Dietary-induced differences were related to genetic strain, but were less significant than the hereditary factors, unless the extremes (Zucker-obese and wild rats) were excluded.
