Fourteen rice genotypes were grown during Kharif, 2012 to evaluate the genetic variability and to determine the genetically diverse genotypes that could be used in hybridization programme for yield enhancement. The analysis of variance revealed that variance due to treatments was highly significant for all the characters studied. High phenotypic coefficient of variation (PCV) and genotypic coefficient of variation (GCV) were obtained for plant height followed by number of spikelets per panicle, number of grains per panicle, catalase, day to 50% flowering, biological yield per plant and flag leaf area. Heritability was found to be high (>75%) for all the characters studied except number of tillers per plant, spikelets fertility and Na⁺/K⁺ ratio which showed moderate heritability. High heritable value coupled with high genetic advance as percent of mean was observed for plant height, flag leaf area, test weight, biological yield per plant, harvest index and grain yield per plant, suggesting their utility for effective selection for yield improvement of rice.
