Studies of human milk relevant to milk banking
1984
Garza, C. | Nichols, B.L.
A summary of investigations carried out at a child nutrition research center concerns the nutritional and immunological composition of human milk for term and preterm deliveries, and the effects of specific collection, storage, and processing conditions on mature human milk for banking. The results indicated that the calorie and nutrient content and selected enzymatic activities were influenced by the completeness with which the breast was emptied, and that storage temperatures and container type (pyrex; polyethylene; polypropylene) influenced key immunological components. The composition and compositional differences in milk from mothers delivering at term or prematurely were distinctly different, with further changes occurring during the weaning period. None of the milk studied satisfied current estimates of nutrient needs of premature infants. (wz)
