Nutrition and the new health awareness
1982
White, Philip L. | Selvey, Nancy
Improvement in public health will occur when personal efforts are made to reduce risk of disease (stopping smoking, limiting alcohol and drug use, increasing activity etc.). Physicians have little time to change patient's behavior in health practices. Mass media expose the public to conflicting recommendations. Examples are given in areas of weight loss diets, health foods, including vitamin and mineral supplements, and metabolic therapy (e.g., degenerative, nutritional, and psychological disorders caused by a metabolic imbalance are treated with laetrile, high dosage nutritional supplements, coffee enemas, etc.). A successful attack on the problem may include visits by the physician to health food stores or metabolic clinics, and written or verbal response to mass media. (rkm)
