Metabolizable energy of human mixed diets
1986
Miles, C.W. | Webb, P. | Bodwell, C.E.
The nutrient and metabolizable energy content were determined for a standardized mixed diet in a study of 9 subjects (4 women, 5 men; ages 21-46). The subjects consumed a diet necessary to maintain body weight for 3 weeks, followed by 6 weeks on a diet that provided 1000 kcal/day below that necessary to maintain body weight. Calculations of the metabolizable energy from protein, fat, and carbohydrate by the US Atwater method gave higher values than those obtained by the English method. The difference in these 2 methods for predicting the metabolizable energy of individual foods and mixed diets is discussed. Data on the calorie/nitrogen ratio in urinary excretion also are discussed.(wz)
