Sullivan, A.D. | Gottschall-Pass, K. | Joudrey, C. | Druhan, N.
A survey of 899 young adolescents in one Nova Scotian county used a questionnaire to assess nutrition knowledge needed to make health-related lifestyle choices. The test was moderately difficult (mean score of 50.7%). Significant (p < .05) differences in mean scores were found among grades, breakfast pattern groups, and exercise levels and between genders. Students in both grades 9 and 8 scored significantly higher than grade 7; daily breakfast eaters scored significantly higher than chronic breakfast skippers; light exercisers scored significantly higher than very light exercisers; and females scored significantly higher than males. When examined for content, performance was stronger in general nutrition facts and food composition but weakest in knowledge of the Nutrition Recommendations for Canadians guidelines. Definite gaps in nutrition knowledge were identified for future adolescent programs.
