The enhanced flame resistance properties of a covalently-bonded flame retardant were observed on fabrics treated with a reactive cyanuric chloride linked compound. The thermal behavior of durable and non-durable finished fabrics were characterized by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and flame test. The compound effectively served as a semi-durable flame retardant system on cotton fabric at substantially lower than usual mass and phosphorus concentration levels when bonded to cotton. Non-bonded flame retardant, on the other hand, also showed enhanced flame resistance properties when 10% to 48% chlorine atoms per phosphorus atom were present due to the phosphorus-chlorine synergism.
