Growth hormone and vitamin D
1979
Growth hormone is believed to stimulate intestinal calcium absorption. Somatotropin is known as the growth hormone, but all anabolic hormones (insulin, androgen, thyroxin) may be considered growth hormones. The calcium absorption may be brought about by increasing the production of 1,25 dihydroxyvitamin D3. It is not known whether parathyroid hormone has any role in this process. Altered growth hormone secretion causes skeletal growth disorders, but the hormone seems to have no direct effect on bone.
