Nutrient content of beech leaves with special consideration of temporal variation on nutrient poor sites in North Rhine Westfalia | Nährelementgehalt in Buchenblättern unter besonderer Berücksichtigung der zeitlichen Variation auf basenarmen Standorten in Nordrhein-Westfalen
1997
Asche, N.
In the years 1991–1996 investigations on beech nutrition were carried out on different experimental plots in order to ascertain whether the nutrient content in beech leaves is constant over a period or shows distinct temporal variations. For the study leaves were taken in late July or early August of each year from the light crown of 3 dominant beeches on each plot and analysed chemically. Analyses demonstrated significant temporal variations in element contents and element relations in the leaves. It was higher than the spatial variation of tree nutrition in one year (especially for K). Studies with longer sampling intervals (e.g. every 5 years) provide only little or no reliable information on the temporal variation of nutrient status of the trees and should be accompanied by analyses of leaves of identical trees supplemented to avoid an overinterpretation of measured figures. Significant relations between chemical status or the element supply of the mineral soil and the nutrition of beech leaves were only found for Mn.
