District-wise Agricultural Crop Performance Scenario in West Bengal during Past Three Decades
2013
Chatterjee, Soumitra | Ray, Jui
This study has evaluated district-wise growth in acreage and production of major crops the state of West Bengal over the past three decades (1980–81 to 2011–12) and has measured the level of instability in area and production crop-wise. Subsequently, a comparative study on relative performance of districts in terms of individual crop as well as aggregation of major crops grown in the state has been performed, to identify the district-wise overall crop-performance scenario for the past three decades. Simple tabular methods along with statistical tools have been applied to calculate the relative changes in acreage and production of crops as well as growth and instability over decades. The relative crop performance of the districts has been evaluated by composite z-scoring followed by K-Means and Hierarchical cluster analysis. The study has shown a declining trend in growth rate with instability of foodgrains over the decades, indicating a shift in rice-based cropping system, while jute, potato and mustard are still cultivated with a stable acreage and production. The districts belonging to well fertile Gangetic alluvium tract have shown a higher level of crop performance as compared to the Hilly and Red Lateratic districts of West Bengal.
