In studying the mechanism of adaptation to a low protein diet, the male highlanders of Papua New Guinea were studied eating their usual diet or an experimental diet. In the experimental diet to which more protein beyond the usual sweet potatoes/vegetables was added, much of the dietary nitrogen was retained. In a group fed a sweet potato diet followed by a low protein sweet potato diet, it was found that nitrogen true digestibility and net protein utilization increased. Nitrogen balance showed no significant change. The conclusion was that dietary energy intake plays an important role for this group in adapting to low protein intake.(jd-b)
