Extract: Serum concentrations of vitamin D metabolites and bone mineral status were examined in a group of Aleutian Islanders age 40-75 from St Paul Island, Alaska. Based on 25-(OH)D vitamin D status appeared adequate. However, high concentrations of 1,25-(OH)2D and very low concentrations of 24,25-(OH)2D3 were found. Among females, low bone mineral levels were associated with high concentrations of 1,25-(OH)2D. A low calcium intake in these Aleutians may be responsible for high concentrations of 1,25-(OH)2D and resorption of calcium from bone. (author)
