Comparative studies on biodegradation effect of neem (Azadirachta indica A. Juss) and of an organic fertilizer added in soil

Series of experiments were conducted in order to examine the effect of neem and commercial organic fertilizer (Geo) on soil organic matter, chemical properties and microbial flora. Five grams of neem tissues or 5 g of Geo were added into soil samples (50 g each) with low content in organic matter. After an incubation period (15 weeks), soil organic matter content, concentration of N, P, K, Cu, Zn and Mn, and number of bacterial colonies were counted. The integration of neem and Geo in soil added equivalent content of organic matter. Geo increased soil electrical conductivity, and the content of available forms of N-NO3, P, Zn and Mn in soil samples. On the contrary, neem increased soil pH and the content of available forms of N-NH4, K and Cu. However, both neem and Geo increased the content of organic-P. In addition, soil treated with neem had lower number of bacterial colonies compared to control and Geo.
