Cone penetrometers are increasingly used for environmental site investigations. The penetrometer method can be used for geophysical and geological profiling, as well as for sampling of soil, soil gas, and ground water. With the aim of adding to the utility of the cone penetrometer, three prototype methods to install piezometers were tested. The piezometers installed by these methods are suitable for the measurement of water levels in unconfined aquifers. They cannot, however, be considered replacements for water sampling monitoring wells because they do not satisfy monitoring well construction guidelines. These guidelines are based on the assumption of holes drilled by auger or rotary drill methods and may not be appropriate for designing penetrometer-installed monitoring wells. At present the ability to use the penetrometer rig to install piezometers reduces the number of tasks for which traditional auger and rotary drilling methods are needed and can aid project management flexibility.
