La quête des épices, moteur de l’histoire | The quest for spices, a historical driving force
2012
Birlouez, E.
Throughout history, man has been fascinated by spices. Carriers of captivating aromas and subtle flavours, symbols of luxury and class “distinction”, with benefits for the body, potent stimulators of dreams⦠these humble plants are as sought after as gold. Worldwide trade of these commodities started 5,000 years ago; pepper corns, cinnamon sticks, cloves and nutmeg motivated the search for distant lands, led to the opening up of new shipping routes and encouraged the discovery of a “New World”.
