Changes in the CPI
1987
Blanciforti, L.A. | Parlett, R.
A brief review describes and discusses various aspects of the consumer price index (CPI). Topics include: the definition, characteristics, and use of the CPI; the rationale for revising the CPI (to reflect different consumer lifestyles and to emphasize items of increasing importance in the consumer budget); how the "market basket" is upgraded; how the CPI is computed; and the 3 stages involved in revising the CPI to the new CPI. Data on changes in the CPI for variety of categories for all urban consumers over the 1966-1986 period are included (using a CPI of 100 for 1967), showing an increase in the CPI by 2-4 fold for 1986.(wz)
