Estimated fluoride intake of 6-month-old infants in four dietary regions of the United States
1980
Ophaug, R.H. | Singer, León | Harland, B.F.
The fluoride content of 11 composite food groups that make up the infant "market basket" from four different dietary regions of the United States is discussed. The regions were: south (Orlando, FL), north east (Philadelphia, PA), north central (Grand Rapids, MI), and west (Los Angeles, CA). All cities except Los Angeles have fluoridated water supplies, and the market baskets represented the average 14-day consumption of a 6-month old infant. The fluoride intakes in mg/day were: Orlando, 0.541; Philadelphia, 0.272; Grand Rapids, 0.207; and Los Angeles, 0.354. From 44 to 80% of the daily fluoride intake came from drinking water, dairy products and non-milk substitutes, and grain and cereal products. In all cities except Orlando, the daily fluoride intake was below the optimal level of 0.05 mg/kg of body weight.
