Hypomagnesemia and hypokalemia in 1,000 treated ambulatory hypertensive patients

The prevalence of hypomagnesemia and hypokalemia in 1,000 ambulatory hypertensive patients under treatment is reported. Hypomagnesemia and hypokalemia occur regularly in treated, ambulatory hypertensive patients. The hypomagnesemic group required a greater number of antihypertensive medications to maintain an acceptable range of blood pressure than did the nonhypomagnesemic patients. Alterations in magnesium (Mg) metabolism may influence the sodium-potassium flux from cells and thus affect the reactivity of blood vessels. The possibility that Mg plays an important role in blood pressure control dictates the need for further study. (kbc)
